Carol Hayward Fell is well-known exhibiting Ceramic artist and an enthusiastic art teacher who loves interacting with people and specialises in teaching adults to draw and paint. Carol is fully qualified with a Fine Arts Degree and HED (Teaching Diploma), from UKZN in Pietermaritzburg. She has been working in clay since 1971 and teaching art for over 30 years. She now teaches privately from her home studio, CAROLART STUDIO. In the past she worked as a full-time Art lecturer at Natal Technikon (now DUT) for six years. Prior to that, she taught Art to grade 7 to Matric at Danville Park Girls’ High School in Durban.

In addition to teaching painting and drawing, she is a well-known practising artist who works primarily in clay, currently making ceramic sculptures that are exhibited throughout South Africa. As a top award-winning ceramic artist, she has work in most of South Africa’s leading public art museums and other art collections. After making mainly pots for 30 years, in 2006 she started making ceramic sculptures of horses, which can be viewed in top commercial galleries in Durban, Cape Town, Western Cap and Johannesburg . These highly individual expressive works are instantly recognisable and have earned Carol several awards. Her sculptures are continually evolving, often including an element of humour or whimsy. Some of her more popular works also include a “rider” such as a small dog, cat or birds. The Kimberley Art Museum, (WHAG), recently purchased her “White Horse With Birds” for their public collection. She has also created several zebras, which are popular with international collectors. One of these recently sold at the Art in the Forest Women in Clay exhibition in Constantia, Cape Town.

She is the current winner of the Corobrik National Ceramics Exhibition, receiving “Best on Show”  which was held in  Cape Town in 2014 – seen above.

Carol enjoys the balance of teaching just two morning classes a week to fulfil her love of interacting with other artists in between her private time spent creating her own work in ceramics.
