Carol Hayward Fell with her work at the KZNSA Gallery
Carol creates unique ceramic sculptures of horses. She regularly makes new works for exhibitions, or on a commission basis. These are entirely hand-made out of high-fired stoneware and porcelain clay and fired in an electric kiln in her home studio. Her quirky horse sculptures, are chracterised by having long, exaggerated necks, clearly defined heads and simple legs. The horse’s’ bodies may be patterned with texture, or covered with specific drawings of other images in a playful way. The surface of the horses, unlike her ceramic vessesl of the past, are unglazed, thus preserving the texture created during the making process. Some of the horse sculptures have other animals on their backs: dogs, cats, birds, monkeys, or even an octopus.
